In my opinion, it isn't a question of "which is better", and yes a question of which is necessary on a right time.
I think that both have just one difference: the "real" conversation is when two or more people can meet everyday or frequently on a school or a work place. The online conversation, such as typing or with a live video feed, is when people are far away from each other, when people can't meet personally at the moment or even when people had already seen each other in the day and at the moment they're home.
However, people talk to strangers online. The person on the other side pretends to be a nice person, but it could be a pedophile, a rapist or even a murder. People must watch out when they meet people online and how they share their personal information.
